Assistance to the West Africa Rice Development Association. Project findings and recommendations

The project provided primarily institutional support to the West Africa Rice Development Association (WARDA), based in Monrovia, Liberia. The objectives of this association were the promotion of rice production, together with improving storage, processing, quality and marketing of rice in its West African member states. During the first two phases, the main lines of support by the project to WARDA included : directing WARDA administrative and financial services and assisting in the executive management, undertaking missions for projects identification and appraisal, exchanging information and conducting joint missions with bilateral and multilateral financing institutions. Phase III was mainly concerned with the areas of research, development, training and management. Considering the importance of trained manpower in the rice sector, the project recommended to WARDA following training programme : i) Training for manpower development within WARDA's research network; ii) Training for the transfer of rice technology to the extension services of WARDA's member states; iii) Production and dissemination of training and extension materials. Implementation period : February 1972 - July 1987. Project funding : UNDP, US$ 3,087,938
