Salt tolerance of banana during initial growth phase

The effects of different levels of soil salinity (CEse = 0.90; 3.72; 6.60 and 10.75 dS/m) on different cultivars of banana (Nanica, Nanicão, Pacovan and Mysore) during first five months of growth were studied in a greenhouse under representative climatic conditions of northeast Brazil, adopting a completely randomised factorial (4x4) experimental design with four replications. The crop was planted in plastic recipients containing 18 kg of an afluvial eutrophic soil. During the growth period variables such as height, diameter, leaf area and dry weight of plant root were observed. The statistical analyses of data revealed that upper levels of salinity (6.60 and 10.75 dS/m) significantly affected growth variables, though effects were more pronounced in the leaf area and in the dry weights of plants. The cultivars Nanica and Nanicão belonging to group AAA sub-group Cavendish presented higher tolerance to salinity compared to cultivars of group AAB sub-group Prata (Pacovan and Mysore), although Pacovan showed to be still more sensitive than Mysore.
