Weed interference in sunflower. Competition in time

Two field experiments were conducted in the Estação Experimental Agronômica of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, in Guaíba, RS, Brazil, the first one during the growing season of 1982/83 and the second in 1983/84. The objective was to study the effects of weed control in time on sunflower agronomic characteristics, investigating the efficiency of hoeings done at specific periods during sunflower cycle. The interference of weeds not controlled or lately controlled determined negative effects on sunflower traits, mainly on grain number per head and on grain yield. The greatest increases in these characteristics were attained when the crop was kept weed-free during a period of 40 to 45 days, being of 15 to 20 days after its emergence the limit to start controlling weeds, what was obtained by one or two hoeings.
