Effect of genotype and feeding program on zoometric traits and sexual maturity in Campero INTA breeders

Body weight, zoometric indicators and age at sexual maturity were evaluated in two genotypes of Campero INTA female breeders under two feeding programs rearing. 200 hens of the synthetic maternal population E of the Campero INTA chicken and 200 of the simple hybrid ES*A were used. At week 24 body weight comb index, cloaca width, hip width, abdominal length and age at sexual maturity were recorded. ANOVA was performed in a 2x2 factorial design. No significant differences were recorded for body weight by genotype. The secondary sexual characteristics and zoometric indices related to the reproductive sphere reflected a higher degree of development for the E genotype. The feeding program showed a marked effect on body weight in both populations with a greater development of the sexual characteristics and an advancement of the entrance to sexual maturity. We concluded there are differences in the allometric integration between body weight and reproductive development between different genotypes of Campero INTA hens. The greater allocation of food during rearing accelerates reproductive development and the entry into sexual maturity this confirms that in slow-growing birds the feeding program is a modulator of reproductive function.
