Taxonomic revision of the Dichotomius cotopaxi species-group (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae)

Dichotomius is a genus of dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae), very abundant and diverse in Neotropical ecosystems, with about 190 described species. In the last decade, progress has been made in its taxonomic revision; however, there are still some inconsistencies in its taxonomy. Based on the external morphology and the male genitalia of the type material and other material deposited in fourteen entomological collections, this work presents the taxonomic revision of the Dichotomius cotopaxi species group sensu Arias-Buriticá and Vaz-de-Mello. The definition of the group is expanded and the key for the determination of its species is presented in Spanish and English. Five species are included in the group, all with distribution in high areas of the Andes (2200-3200 m altitude): Dichotomius cotopaxi (Peru and Ecuador), Dichotomius germanchoi sp. nov. (Colombia), Dichotomius luederwaldti sp. nov. (Ecuador), Dichotomius monstrosus (Colombia), and Dichotomius ribeiroi (Colombia). Lectotype designations are made for Copris cotopaxi, Pinotus monstrosus, Pinotus abnormis, Copris scalpellum and Pinotus rugatus. D. rugatus is synonymized with D. monstrosus. The following information is provided for each of the species included in the group: Taxonomic history, citation of the species in published bibliography, description or redescription of males and females, list of material examined, photographs of external morphology, illustrations of the male genital organ and its endophallites, and distribution maps.
