Discussion on the Visual Perception of Chinese Characters Based on Neurocognitive Linguistics

Abstract This article will study the cognitive nature of Chinese characters and the neurocognitive basis of the visual perception of Chinese characters in Chinese learning through the dismantling of Chinese character components, adopted into the “Relational Network Theory” (RNT) proposed by Sydney Lamb. We will also discuss the neurocognitive basis of zìgǎn, 字感 (Bai & Liu, 2006), GraphoMorphological Awareness of Chinese characters, an abstract concept entangled in the Chinese Character Teaching (CCT), and some of the concepts included in Ausubel’ Meaningful Learning Theory, to ground a teaching methodology of the CCT in the Chinese International Teaching (CIT).
