Kyoto Protocol and its application in the oil palm agroindustry in Colombia

The Kyoto Protocol and its Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) represent a great opportunity for oil palm companies in Colombia of participating in the reduction of Greenhouse Effect Gases and moreover in the carbon international market. The objective of this mechanism is to improve climatic change conditions, which are significantly affecting the operation of many natural systems with great economic, environmental and social impacts. The idea of the first phase is to talk the companies with oil mill into using biogas from the anaerobic open ponds so as to mitigate impacts, such as that of Greenhouse Effect Gases, into substituting fossil sources and generating renewable energy to satisfy power needs. The objective of the project's second phase is for the companies to put in place cogeneration and the sale of renewable energy programs. The Project includes the structuring and participation of companies, strategies used to include maximum benefits that in turn enable the control of implementation, participation, design, transaction and investment costs. Moreover, it aims at obtaining more flexibility in the United Nations approval process, and at the end of the day at attaining a higher benefit in the CER value, according to its trade independence during this first compliance period of the Kyoto Protocol.
