FR 19. Fourty five day breeding season. III: Calf growth

This research was performed at Santa Rosa ranch located on a humid tropic in the southwest region of Táchira State, Venezuela, with Brahman heifers kept on pasture, supplemented with minerals and submitted to 45-days-breeding season beginning on march the first (E) vs conventional 90-days starting on april the first (C), to evaluate the growth performance of their calves. Least-squares analysis of variance on birth (PN, n = 210) and weaning (P205, n = 183) weights were performed including: Treatment (T:E,C) and calf’s year of birth (A: 1985,86,...93). sire (P:1,2,...,27) and sex (S:M,H). Adjusted means for PN and P205 were 28.9 ± 0.7 and 154.7 ± 2.5 kg, respectively. PN was affected by A (P<.01) and P205 was affected by A, P and S (P<.01). Forcing the heifers to calve early and in a short period had no effect on PN or P205. PN and P205 increased through A, superior sire produced calves that weighted 105 and 49 % more at PN and P205, respectively, and male calves were 4 and 7 % heavier at PN and P205, respectively.
