1. Soviet Union’s President Mikhail Gorbachev has been deposed by the Communist Party hardliners. Prime Minister ANR Robinson says that the coup is a clear reaction to Gorbachev’s policies, whilst Prime Minister Michael Manley states that any reversal of Gorbachev’s policies will be a major setback for the Soviet Union. Trevor Monroe, leader of the Workers Party of Jamaica, comments on the demise of Mr. Gorbachev and the future of Marxism and socialism.
