Seguridad, higiene ocupacional y disposición de insumos veterinarios en clínicas de pequeños animales del Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires = Occupational safety, hygiene and disposal of veterinary supplies in small animal practices from the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires

Although accidents and occupational diseases are freguent in veterinary p ractice, the adoption of safety precautions is deficient. "fhe objectives of this study were ro describe the adoption of basic hygiene and safety practices in small animal clinicians. A cross-sectional observational smdy was carried out in 130 professionals from the Norrhwestern of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. Data were collected by means of a structured guestionnaire. Statistical analysis included Student's test, Pearson's correlation, x2 and Fisher's exact test. "fhe majority washed and disinfecred rheir hand berween parienrs (95.7% and 54.0%, respecrively), while 61.8% dried rhem wirh disposable paper rowels. Gloves and workwear on clinical pracrices and lead aprons on radiology were rhe mosr used personal prorecrive elemenrs. More rhan half of rhe respondenrs (54.6%) change rheir workwear everyday; 84,6% washed rhem ar home and 68.5% did nor always washed rhem separarely from family clorhing. Some respondenrs reused disposable supplies (iarex gloves 4,7%; syringes 9,3%; needles 4,7%; scapel blades 1 5,6%; face masks 41,8%; prorecrive clorhing 39,6%) and 82.3% always disposed of sharp irems rhrough a licensed enrerprise. The majoriry of vererinarians (57.4%) considered rhar rhey had nor had rraining in occuparional healrh. Ir is suggesred rhar active managemenr of healrh risks should be improved in undergraduare rraining and conrinuing educarion programs for graduares.
