Education and development

Presents educational development in Nepal achieved under the National Education System Plan 1971-1976, with particular reference to higher education - Work experience programmes form an integral part of college programmes. They provide students with an opportunity to serve in village development and to relate their academic knowledge to the reality in rural areas. The main activity is teaching but students participate also in other development work, such as family planning. Because of the importance of sciene and technology for economic development, science instruction at higher education level is given increased attention. admission to colleges is governed by numerus clausus in order to meet manpower needs of the country. At the school level, the Plan emphasizes vocational education. In teacher education, programmes have been developed which permit to cope with one teacher schools in villages. There is a need for increased expenditures, but efforts should be also directed at a greater efficiency of the school system.
