Problems related to training of community leaders and their role in achieving changing attitudes are discussed. In a concluding analysis, the results of the programmes are assessed in terms of stated goals and the programmes are analysed within four different conceptual frameworks. Six assumptions which have been identified by the researcher as implicit and explicit in the theory of animation rurale are tested in accordane with their application to the two case studies presented. Based on conclusions about the effectiveness of animation rurale, six hypotheses are formulated about the pre-conditions necessary for implementing a comprehensive educational programme for rural development. A literature review is included.
