Bananas: an unfortunate loss leader

Far from the old debates on the European market organisation system that have animated discussions for twenty years, the world banana market is facing immense technical challenges (emerging diseases), environmental challenges (drastically reducing the use of pesticides), social challenges (improving the standard of living and working conditions of workers) and economic challenges (recovering added value). But bananas are also suffering from their status as a loss leader, particularly among European distributors.
