Natural rubber processing technology research and development (smallholder improvement). Sriwijaya University Palembang Sumatera Selatan. 13th February 1987

We have good reason to be optimistic if we consider the future of the natural rubber market. Indeed, the per capita consumption of rubber is 0,4kg in the developing countries, which is very low compared to that of developed countries (about 3,5 kg). International expert predict a gap of about 1,5 million tonne of natural rubber between production and demand during the next 20 years. Local consumption is already increasing by more 8% per annuum (90000 t. in 1985). A number of years ago the Governor of South Sumatra his Excellency Sainan Sagiman, had the visionary idea of rubber development through smallholders. Thank to him and financial support from the World Bank, BPP Sembawa was created as an exemplary showplace. Consistency in the quality of natural rubber will be the most important target to obtain in the coming years; and the improvement of on-farm processing condition is one of the main ways of getting this result. The IRCA consultants' proposals research and application programmes in ·processing technology are: the improvement of natural rubber quality by means of the graduate replacement of slab by other collection, coagulation and storage methods, the production of sheets, big cup lumps or polybag rubber; the setting up of processing methods adapted to raw material quality i.e. in order to maintain good crumb and sheet quality; parallel studies of the technological properties of compounds made from these form of rubber taking into account plantations parameters such as clonal origin, tapping systems, and ecoclimatic conditions; the complementation of the production of new qualities i.e. constant viscosity rubber of grades 5 and 10. Thanks to the close cooperation established between France and Indonesia in the field of heveaculture scientists of BPP Sembawa now have the opportunity to go to France where they can get up-to date information on the modern rubber industry and agronomy, which will result increasingly fruitfull industrials exchanges between the two countries.
