Research programme on biological control of Rubus alceifolius, an invasive species on Reunion Island

Rubus alceifolius is an invasive exotic plant species on Reunion island originating in South-east Asia. It grows as a shrub and climber in thin undergrowth and undergrown areas up to an altitude of 1600 m. Fruiting occurs only up to 1100 m. Several insects (Feadon fulvescens, Cleorina modiglianii, Cibdella janthiana and pathogens (Gerwasia rubi, Hamaspora acutissima) found in its native area have been tested for biology and specificity. Only C. janthiana appears to be a potential biological control agent for Reunion island and it will be introduced in quarantine for further research before proposing its release locally.
