Rice in Morocco

Rice crop was introduced in Morocco on 1948 to evaluate the heavy and flat soils of the Gharb region (north west). Actually, it's extended to the extreme north (Loukkos) with 1100 ha. The cultivation areas ranges between 600 to 9000 ha depending on the water ability, the average of yield is 4.2 tons/ha. Rice is not a staple food in Morocco, the consumption is only 1kg/person/year (preference for long and translucent grain imported (good quality and low price). In Morocco, rice is cultivated under irrigation conditions from April to September and it's represented by Indica and Japonica. The strategy of Rice breeding program is to improve varieties with high potential of production, short duration, resistant to blast and lodging and good quality. The prospect of research has 3 levels: Development of cooperation with international organization, application of technology for breeding and cultivation and transfer of technology to the farmers. Several trials and experimentation are conducted in Allal Tazi Experimental station. The result showed that INRAM possess actually five good varieties which are: medium to early (117-135 days), high yield (>7,5 tons/ha), long grain (>10mm), 1000 grains (26 to40 grams), broken kernels very low than thaibonnet and Elio which represent 90% of cultivated areas ( 7 to 12%). But except FARAH variety there are all sensitive to blast.
