The opportunities to use citrus and relatives species for new rootstocks breeding by somatic hybridizations

Somatic hybridization (S.H.) is a relatively new approach among breeding techniques for rootstock and scion cultivar improvement on citrus. Somatic hybridization enables to combine complementary characteristics of donor species within the available citrus germplasm. The potentials of this technique for citrus improvement is presented here. The studies were carried out within a joint program developed by the Department of Horticulture of the University of Cukurova in Adana (Turkey) and Cirad-Flhor, in Montpellier, and Guadeloupe (France).
