Study of the genetic structure of the European anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus population in the Azov and Black Sea Basin
Genetic diversity of 11 samples of the European anchovy from the Azov and Black Sea Basin has been studied. Analysis of the microsatellite variability has shown high intrapopulation variance (96 %). The level of inter-population differentiation by all loci was Fst=0.02 on average. High level of the European anchovy variability allows for development of a single stock, which easily adapts to changing environment. Migratory activity of this species ensures a high rate of gene flow among individual spawning populations (Nm=22.5 %). Phenotypic distinction of the European anchovy in the Azov and Black Sea Basin is, evidently, epigenetic.
