In 2005, the world celebrated the 10th anniversary of the commercialization of genetically modified (GM) or biotech crops. The total acreage of these crops being planted in that same year reached 1 billion acres involving the participation of 8.5 million farmers in 21 different countries worldwide. This represents a significant increase in the adoption of biotech crops starting in only 6 countries during the earlier part of its first decade of commercialization.
