Rejuvenecimiento, caracterización, evaluación y utilización de jícama en CATIE-Costa Rica
The rejuvenation, characterization and evaluation unit of Plant Genetic Resources at CATIE-Costa Rica has the responsibility for rejuvenating, characterizing and evaluating yam bean (Pachyrrhizus spp.) accessions as well as supporting its utilization. The main target groups are the national programs and other potential users of the available genetic resources. Since the value of any conserved germplasm will be greatly determined by the information available on it, high priority is given to systematic characterization work. Here, descriptors are determined which have been discussed and agreed upon by the respective yam bean group. At present a total of more than 100 accessions of more than 5 different species are being multiplied, rejuvenated and characterized for various important morpho-agronomic traits. Further evaluation activities are coordinated by the unit and are carried out in cooperation with national and private institutions. The results of characterization work of Yam bean at Costa Rica are presented. A summary is presented showing the utilization of Yam bean`s germplasm in the national programmes. With a minimum technology input, some yam bean accessions could become very important food or income sources for the region`s farmers. Some yam beans could even be potential export crops. Thus, the overall objective at CATIE has been to determine the promising accessions best adapted to different zones in order to make the greatest possible contribution.
