A summary of the characteristics and evolution of the national agricultural research institutes in Latin America is presented. The role of public organizations in research and the dissemination of new production techniques in capitalist economies is discussed. The dominant institutional model is analyzed from an historical perspective, and its funcionality in a Latin American context is debated
