Physiological quality of the seeds of seven cultivars of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) as a function of natural and artificial drying processes

The effects of natural and artificial drying on the physiological quality of certified seed were evaluated in the coffee cultivars Icatu IAC 2945, Icatu IAC 2944, Icatu IAC 3282, Catuai IAC 62, Catuai IAC 144, Mundo Novo IAC 388-17 and Catucai JBI. The seeds were sun dried on a concrete surface and in an oven at an air temperature of 45°C. The final moisture content was 15 percent w.b. Germination and vigour tests were used to evaluate seed quality after drying. A complete randomized design was used to compare the treatments (3 treatments with 4 repetitions). The results showed that sun dried seeds had the highest germination values, with the exception of cv. Icatu IAC 2944. The vigour tests showed better values for seeds with high initial moisture content, and the lowest values for oven dried seeds.
