Reproduction of Meloidogyne exigua Goeldi, 1887, in coffee 'Iapar-59' and 'Catuai'

M. exigua is an important pest of coffee (Coffea arabica), causing 50-68 percent reduction in yields. In 1987, it was detected in up to 31 percent of plant samples in Minas Gerais State. This infection increased to 45 percent of the samples in 1999. This study evaluatedthe reproduction of M. exigua in coffee cultivars Iapar-59 and Catuai. One-year-old seedlings were planted in soil, sand, and manure (1:1:1 ratio). After ten days, the seedlings were inoculated with 15000 eggs of M. exigua. The reproduction of M. exigua was evaluated at 53 days after inoculation. Galls were found in all Catuai plants. However, Iapar-59 showed no galls, eggs, or second-stage juveniles of M. exigua. Iapar-59 showed high resistance to M. exigua.
