Effect of wet processing of coffee on river water quality

This study examined the pollution of Ruiru and Komothai rivers in Kiambu district attributed to organic deposits from coffee processing factories. For this purpose, the levels of Bio-chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Suspended Solids (SS), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and pH were determined in a processing season. The results indicated that coffee processing effluent highly affected the water quality within the coffee growing region. Rise in BOD and COD to values greater than 10 to 50 mg/l respectively and an increasing trend of TDS confirmed that coffee processing effluent in the main growing areas of Kiambu district (Zone B) contribute to pollution problems during the two processing seasons. Effluent disposed on land had adverse effect including scorching of the wet-land vegetation. Based on the information gathered, water quality monitoring coupled with mitigation measures still need priority attention in these regions.
