Studies on composting coffee wastes

An eco-friendly and profitable use of coffee wastes, estimated over one lakh tonnes per year, in India, by composting has been suggested in the present study. Based on this and also taking the practical aspects into consideration, the results could be interpreted as follows: i) fruits skin and cherry husk could be composted individually, but not parchment husk, which should always be mixed with either of them; ii) wherever/whenever coffee effluent is availabe, it could be used to wet the substrate and also to maintain moisture, during composting; iii) while composting, addition of rock phosphate is essential for enriching the final product; iv) urea is recommended as an additional source of nitrogen while composting parchment husk; v) neem cake has scope as an additive in place of urea for obtaining 100 percent organic compost and vi) composting upto 90 days would be the optimum period. This period hols good for heaps of small or medium size.
