Waste management coffee industry board

Coffee is the fourth most important agricultural crop in Jamaica. It contributes significantly to employment and agricultural export earning. Jamaica uses the "Wet Method of Processing", and the disposal of the large volume of highly polluted effluent associated with this process has been a challenge. Increase environmental awareness and pressure for other environmental bodies has led to a search for an effective Coffee Pulpery Waste Management System. A critical look at ways to reduce the effluent volume without negative impact on quality of the product has yielded good results. Over 70 percent reduction in effluent volume has been obtained. By applying screening sedimentation an anaerobic treatment to the reduced volume of effluent, it is possible to meet the standard set by the regulatory body, which allow discharge to the river.
