Epidemiologia da ferrugem do cafeeiro sob alta densidade de plantio: um enfoque de sistema :

Structured approach to study economically important diseases like coffee rust is imperative to integrate various crop and disease management options. Systems approach has been used for developing forecasting systems to manage coffee rust. Fundamental and empirical models were developed for the structural components of the epidemic system - initial source of inoculum, and the sporulation, dissemination and infection processes. These components were then used in the prediction of infection rate under field conditions. Action thresholds, for timing fungicide applications, were established to keep the infection rate below the economic yield loss. A simple forecasting system was developed in which grower has to quantify the rust intensity and the berry yield as high or low to time fungicide applications. The systems approach taken in developing this forecasting system allows manipulation of functions used for different components to come up with alternate forecasting methods to suit different growers. Change in the cropping system, such as high density planting, can be incorporated into the epidemic system depending on its effect on different components. Functions describing the behaviour of various structural components could be improved and a more efficient forecasting system could be generated. Grower acceptance can be improved by developing sequential sampling techniques to quantify disease intensity and by using geographic information systems to obtain high resolution weather information
