The effects of coffee (Coffea arabica L.) shoot removal, excision of leaves and stem girdling on nitrate reductase activity and on nitrate and the soluble sugar levels in roots were studied. All the treatments led to a fall in the observed parameters and in the rate of N-organic/nitrate in the xylem sap of detopped roots. The addition of glucose to the roots of detopped plants almost restored the nitrate reductase activity
