An analysis of rainfall is South Indian coffee tracts, 1: Karnataka

An analysis has been carried out to study the rainfall pattern - its quantum, distribution, variability or stability - during the forty year period (1950-89) in five coffee growing zones of Karnataka vis., Chikmagalur, North Coorg, South Coorg, Hassan and Biligiris. Excepting Biligiris, all other zones exhibit similar characteristics in monthly distribution and seasonal contribution. The variability, as indicated by coefficient of variation, is high ranging from 103 to 332 percent during January to March and December, depending upon the zone and month. During April and May, the rainfall is more stable with C.V. ranging from 39 to 68 percent together with a better chance of getting more than 25 mm rainfall normally required for blossoming and fruit setting in coffee in any given year. The stability has been found to be good during June to November. Among the four seasons, southwest monsoon season was the least variable while winter season rainfall was highly unstable. In Chikmagalur and North Coorg, a steady decline in the quantum of rainfall could be observed from first decade (1950-59) to fourth decade (1980-89). The decline was apparent only in fourth decade in the case of South Coorg and Biligiris while it was negligible in Hassan
