Varieties of coffee in relation to drought tolerance

1. Some of the Ethiopian arabicas like Tafarikela are also known to be drought hardy. Perhaps, some of the indigenous species like C. wightiana and C. travancorensis which have no commercial importance thrive under marginal conditions exhibiting drought hardiness. 2. Other African diploid species such as C. liberica, C. excelsa, C. eugenioides are also known to be drought hardy perhaps because of their deep rooted nature. It is generally observed that robustas are not drought hardy plants. On the contrary arabicas could be well managed under drought conditions. 3. Indian station selections with particular reference to drought hardiness are as follows: San Ramon hybrids (the roots system is very deep in them) Sln 9 and Sln 11
