Nematode problem of coffee and its management

The coffee root-lesion nematode, Pratylenchus coffeae has been found to be highly destructive to arabica coffee (Coffea arabica) in the coffee tracts of South India while the other commercially cultivated species, robusta (C. canephora) exhibit tolerance to P. coffeae and other nematodes in general. P. coffeae is capable of killing young plants and cause "decline" of bearing plants. Association of heavy population of certain ectoparasitic species like Hemicriconemoides, Nothocriconema, Helicotylenchus, etc. with arabica coffee results in "crinkle leaf" disorder. Application of the available chemical nematicides in order to control nematodes has not given desired results, but leaving the planting site fallow after removing the dead and moribund plants and exposing the soil to the summer sun helps in reducing the soil nematode population. It is recommended to plant the nematode infested site with either robusta or arabica-robusta (root-stock) grafted plants
