Pre-requisites for effective farmer adoption of coffee research results
The paper redirects attention to the fact that the failure of smallholder coffee farmers to adopt research findings is due to various constraints, both internal and external to the farmers. The internal constraints are the farmer's own situation as regards stage of development, education and resource endowment. These constraints must be taken into account in developing, through research, adaptable management packages. The external constraints relate to those factors which it is considered the duty of development agencies to deal with. These include effective farmer education, land tenure problems, credit provision and input supply. It is concluded that all these issues must be addressed as a pre-requisite to any expectation of successful adoption by farmers of research findings
