Use of Triadimefon (Bayleton) to control coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix Berk et Br) in Kenya :

During the 1983/85 trial seasons, Triadimefon (Bayleton 25 WP) was evaluated for the control of Coffee Leaf Rust on different curative spray programmes. The best control of leaf rust was achieved with one spray of Bayleton 0,2) applied after the level of rust infection had reached 20 Bayleton arrested growth of the individual rust pustules and rendered them incapable of further sporulation. A second spray of Bayleton did not improve its performance. Copper Nordox (0.35) applied on the recommended protective rust programme (5 sprays per season) gave better control of leaf rust than the best Bayleton treatment. There were no yield differences from all treatments. Considering the chemical costs alone, use of Copper the protective programme to control leaf rust was still cheaper than using Bayleton on the curative programme. However, if spray application time, fuel, and labour costs were to be included, and considering the fact that with Copper Nordox growers have to start spraying before disease is visible, Bayleton may offer a good alternative control of coffee leaf rust in Kenya
