Sistemas agroforestales de café (Coffea arábica) con laurel (Cordia alliodora) y café con poró (Erythrina poeppigiana) en Turrialba, Costa Rica. II. Producción agrícola, maderable y de residuos vegetales

The harvest of coffee (Coffea arabica) in association with laurel (Cordia alliodora) or poro (Erythrina poeppigiana) was measured annually between 1979 and 1984 in the "Experimento Central" of CATIE, Turrialba. The accumulated values for 5 years were 9436 and 12897 kg/ha (dry weight) respectively. The laurel trees also regularly measured and at age 7 had attained an average height of 14.7 m with an average diameter (d.b.h.) of 30.3 cm, giving a total stem wood volume of 90 m3/ha. Both coffee and wood production rates are high. Natural litterfall were studied between November 1981 and October 1984. Annual totals were (kg/ha/a): Coffee with Cordia 7420; Coffee with Erythrina 8847. The residues resulting from the pruning of the poro are very high, reaching together with natural litterfal in the system coffee with Erythrina a total production of 20 t/ha/a. The rate of descomposition of organic residues was exponentially correlated with time. The residues from the coffee-poro system decompose more rapidly that of coffee-Cordia
