Towards improving coffee productivity in the smallholder sector

The study explores the possibilities of bridging the gap between Coffee Research Foundation (CRF) technical recommendations and smallholder practices. Based on data collected in the 1983/84 and 1984/85 farm surveys, the relationship between coffee productivity and input usage is outlined. Input packages more suited to the economic circumstances of small scale coffee farmers are then defined for various yield groups, and an overall development path for the smallholder sector established. Alternative ways of alleviating the constraints to adopting the proposed packages are also discussed
