Observations on the effects of weeding and cover crops on coffee yield and quality
Experiments were initiated at Koru and Ruiru in different ecological zones in Kenya between 1961-1982 to investigate the effects of weeding and perennial cover crops on coffee yield and quality. Clean weeding gave the highest yields of clean coffee in most of the years. Cover crops under high rainfall conditions produced higher coffee yields than partial weeding. Addition of nitrogen fertilizer to coffee inter-cropped with cover crop gave yields almost equal to clean weeded coffee. Starter nitrogen was indicated to be essential for coffee interplanted with Desmodium cover crop. At a low rainfall site Desmodium appeared to deprive the intercropped coffee of some nitrogen and soil moisture resulting in reduction in yield and lowering of quality in comparison with mulching
