Effect of coffee drinking on lipid profile of human volunteers and rats

In vegetarian, non-smoking adult males, consumption of coffee with milk and sugar as in India, even up to 6 cups a day, did not elevate total cholesterol, triacyl glycerols and lipoproteins. High density lipoprotein-chloesterol reamined unaffected. The raio of HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol in the coffee-drinking group was also normal. In albino rats there was actually a decrease of serum triacyl-glycerols with no change in cholesterol. The present study revealed that drinking coffee with milk and sugar in Indian style up to 6 cups may not be a risk factor to coronary heart diseases
