Herbicidal control of weeds in coffee seeded in plastic bags

A screening experiment with three soil fumigants and nine preemergence herbicides on coffee seeded in plastic bags indicated that it is entirely possible to seed coffee directly in soil in the bags and grow the plants for at least 90 days with excellent growth of coffee seedlings and satisfactory control of weeds. Fumigation of the soil in the bags with methyl bromide before planting was a highly effective treatment. SMDC was slightly less effective and allyl alcohol the least effective. Pre-emergence application of DNBP, and low rates of diuron, simazine, and atrazine were reasonably effective for weed control with a minimum adverse effect on the coffee seedlings. The latter three materials also show promise for established coffee. Amizime at low rates was highly effective for weed control, indicating excellent promise for use in coffee production
