A description is given of the growth, shade pattern, and root distribution is shallow porous soils in Western Nigeria of the following temporary shade plants for cocoa: banana and plantain, pawpaw, tree cassava (Manihot glaziovii), Gliricidia, Solanun verbascifolium and pigeon pea.
