Root infection of Theobroma cacao by Phytophthora palmivora

Root infection of Theobroma cacao seedlings by Phytophthora palmivora has been recorded for the first time in Ghana. Under experimental conditions the major effect is a reduction of root absorbing area, accompanied by a decrease in stem lenght, leaf number and area, and fresh and dry weights. Natural infection also occurs. The importance and practical implications of these findings are discussed.
