Light requirements of cocoa: a review

Recent evidence shows that free sugar levels in shaded cocoa are regulated by sunshine hours; that is, light is a limiting factor in shaded cocoa. The well-known effect shade-removal on the performance of cocoa, i.e., stimulation of flowering, pod setting, leaf flushing, higher growth rates and increased yield may now be explained in terms of carbohydrates build-up. These findings emphasise the need for shade management and a proper balance between shade and light requirements for optimal yield. The need for comparative data on yield of cocoa under various recommended shade trees is also emphasised.
