Influencia da origem do grao de pólen sobre alguns caracteres fenotípicos do fruto de cacau (Theobroma cacao L.)

Two cacao cultivars of differing genetic origin, "Catongo" and "Laranja", were chosen to study the influence the origin the pollen grain has on certain phenotypical characters of the cacao fruit. The size and form of the fruits and seeds as well as bean coloration of these two cultivars are highly contrasting. The cultivars were both cross and self-pollinated with the following data being taken from the fruits obtained: total weight of the fruit; total weight of the seeds; total weight of the beans (seeds without seedcoat); average weight of the beans; and the number of seeds. The data obtained was then analysed for each individual character, the following conclusions being found: 1. Highly significant differences were found between treatments for each of the five characters studied, for they are clearly contrasting in the two cultivars. 2. In the comparisons made between the genitors, "Catongo" and "Laranja" independently of the origin of the pollen grains, the differences obtained were also highly significant for all the points studied, for the same reasons mentioned above and which the respective averages confirm. 3. No significant differences were found between the self-and cross-pollinated fruits for each genitor, indicating that they were not influenced by the origin of the pollen grain
