Rehabilitation of cacao with chupons from coppiced trees

Two healthy Amelonado cacao plots were coppiced monthly for a year. Some of the regenerated chupons were left to grow normally while others were either budded or grafted with F3 Amazon scions. The condition or age of the coppiced trees had no effect on regeneration and growth of the chupons. Percentage regeneration was 84.1 to 100 and more than ten chupons were regenerated per coppiced stump. Budding which gave better percentage success than grafting is recommended as it is easier to do and will give more improved plants. Old cacao should be coppiced in November and the regenerated chupons budded in March for good establishment. The prospect of rehabilitating Amelonado trees generally with improved cacao varieties and with cocoa swollen shoot virus tolerant varieties in the Areas of Mass Infection is better
