Wildland management and planning in Brazil

This technical Report was prepared as a component of Phase II of the Project for Forestry Development and Research in Brazil (UNDP/FAO/IBDF/BRA/76/027). It summarizes and complements the internal, semi-annual reports made for FAO between May 1976 and July 1978 and is organized in chapters describing the following dicuete items contained in the Terms of Reference for the Conservation/Parks Component of that Project: National Park System Plan, National Park Legislation, National Forestry Policy Planning, Assessment of National Park System, Institutional measures, Management Planning Teams, General Program For Wildlife Management And Conservation, Training, and Conclusions and Recommendations. In view of the integration achieved between the Expert's activities and those of the counter part agency, as well as the close collaboration with Brazilian colleagues, this report does not reflect the work of the Expert per se but rather the work of the Departmental team which was put together to carry out the activities in which the Expert actively participated. Appendix I contains a list of documents relating to wildland management in Brazil and prepared during the important formative period from 1975-1978 when the course was set for the "Brazilian approach" to parks and wildlife that will likely be followed for many years into the future.
