Community forest and lake reserves in the [Peruvian Amazon]: a local alternative for sustainable use of tropical forests

Forest and lake reserves have been promoted and established in the Peruvian Amazon by rural native and ribereño populations with the help of a grassroots organization, the Federación Departamental de Campesinos y Nativos de Loreto (FEDECANAL). One of the main objectives in the establishment of village or inter-village reserves is to control extraction of lake and forest resources by people from and outside villages. Fishing, hunting, and timber extraction within the reserves are regulated by village or inter-village rules. There are 44 registered village and inter-village forest and lake reserves, comprising a total area of 12,820 ha. These forest and lake reserves are still not recognized by the majority of developers, politicians, conservationists, and researchers. By using two examples: the Mahuizo-cocha inter-village lake reserve and the San Rafael forest reserve we attempt to present and discuss the role of this kind of reserve in promoting conservation.
