Producao sustentada: uma alternativa para o desmatamento

The trial was installed at CVRD Forest Reserve in Buriticupu, State of Maranhao, in pre-amazonic tropical forest area. The experimental module measure 5,0 ha and the management system established consisted in cutting the trees with DBH < 10 cm and DBH > 45 cm, keeping about 100 trees per ha and two matrix trees with DBH > 45 cm per ha. It is described the silvicultural operation realized, its cost and the volume of forest products obtained was 245 st/ha fuelwood and 10 m3/ha of sawmill wood. It was compared the forest production costs in different systems, conditions and rate of interests. The cost of fuelwood production at the forest management was lower than the other systems. Based on the rate of conservative increase, it is estimated a cycle of 20 years at the tested forest management. To revert the present situation of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, the forest management it is presented as a promising forest technic, however it is necessary to start practicing the forest management in demonstrative unit, because as soon as it is diffused and established, new approach and advancement will be obtained and added to the knowledgement available.
