Choice of appropriate technology in Costa Rican farm forestry
Ongoing deforestation in Costa Rica has led to an increasing importance of farm forestry systems (agroforestry systems, plantations and managed natural forest) for the supply of the national timber demand. Efforts so far have been concentrated on reforestation and not on the equipment and methodology needed to harverst and process the timber grown on the farms. Development of this last aspect is necessary as the present forest exploitation techniques in Costa Rica are inadequate for use on farms by farmers. The range of nationally available harvesting and processing techniques which could be appropriate for use on farms is described and a number of technology combinations are proposed for the different farm types in Costa Rica. The labour and machine input of these combinations is analysed making use of the Sundberg theory
