Caracterizaci©đn de la cuenca del r©Ưo Motagua, Guatemala
The watershed of River Motagua, Guatemala is located between 14ð 28' and 15ð 50' latitud north and 88ð 15' and 91ð 15' and 91ð 15' longitud west. The watershed has a high economical and ecological importance. The river has a considerable change in elevation and drains different types of terrains. The water quality of the River Motagua and tributaries showed the effects of the edaphic, morphometric, climatological and geological characteristics, and land use. Thre are three zones well defined concerning the water qualiy: 1) the headwaters showed low values of conductivity and Na was the main ion. 2) The region between stations Chiche and Puente Orellana showed a five-fold increase in conductivity compared with the upper region. 3) The region between stations Puente Orellana and Morales showed approximatly same values of conductivity but the main cations were Mg and Ca. The hydrochemistry of River Motagua along the watershed showed the impacts of land use, deforestation and polution. Some structural and nonstructural measures need to be taken now to prevent future degradation of River Motagua watershed
