This review considers the physiological basis of survival in an adverse environment. Goats are a source of milk, meat and fiber for man in both the humid and arid tropics. The physiological adaptations required for survival deal with the ability to withstand the high air temperature and high solar radiation of the tropics, combined with either low water and food availability of the desert areas or the high humidity of the rainfall woodland and bush areas. Responses to heat by adaptation are discussed. It is concluded that in the course of its adaptation for survival in adverse conditions, the goat has developed diverse anatomical and physiological characteristics which allow it to fully utilize the energy available with minimum impact from the environment
