Proceedings

Various trials have been conducted at the NIRD to establish an economical rearing system for dairy goat kids that would release milk produced by the goat herd for sale. Ten different feeding regimes were studied, over several years, where various types and concentrations of milk replacer feeds formulated for calves and lambs were used along with weaning times ranging from 6 to 12 weeks. Kids reared on goat milk were expected to reach about 15 kg at 12 weeks of age. This was achieved with a cold calf replacer (24 percent protein, 12 percent oil) fed at a concentration in water of 14 percent. Using this systems kids were reared on milk replacer costing less than half the value of the same quantity of goat milk and an average weight of over 20 kg at 12 weeks was recorded
